There are several reasons that may be causing this. For one, look at the settings on your phone. I have a Motorola RAZR and it has a setting that limits the size of a message. This setting can protect you from people sending you HUGE messages on your dime.
The second thing is your phone may not be configured properly. Call you wireless providers support line and have them go through the settings.
