The Psychology of Home Security

Protecting your home isn't all about door locks and technology. Even though there are some great things that can be done to keep your property safe, the biggest factors are psychological. They can exist for both the homeowner (your perception of safety) and the potential burglar (perceiving your home to be a good target). By identifying and manipulating psychological factors on both sides of the spectrum, you can make helpful adjustments to keep your home safe from theft.

One of the first things that any homeowner can do is to make believe "losing their key." If you lost your key and were unable to find one, and had no way to call a locksmith – how would you enter your home? This could be using a special little window that's always unlocked, or perhaps a sliding door that remains open sometimes. If you've found a way into your home with your knowledge – you must assume that an experienced thief can figure it out too. If you leave the window unlocked, lock it. If the sliding door stays cracked because it's off the track, pay a handyman to get it fixed. Someone who cases your house and identifies it for theft will find these weak spots in a matter of minutes – it's their job!

Another big step is simply making your home unattractive to thieves. Burglars don't like being watched, and they certainly don't like neighbors watching them try to break in. If there's easy access to your back yard (where people could break in out of sight), make it difficult to get back without a key. Small latches on gates are easy for any thief to infiltrate – and once in the backyard, he might have all the time he needs to get into your home. Another way to make your home unattractive is to keep it well lit. Motion activated lights are everywhere, and for good reason. If the light flips on, a neighbor often looks over, if even for a second. This attracts attention that the burglar doesn't want. In addition, upgrade your locks. A thief will nearly always come to your door before attempting a robbery in order to evaluate the best method of entry. If you have new locks in good condition, you've nearly eliminated the most convenient avenue of entry.

Finally, consider installing a home alarm system, and actually use it! Although thieves are put off psychologically by signs indicating a home alarm system, it's by no means an end-all deterrent. Burglars can often figure out if an alarm system is activated by looking through a window or casing the home. They can also spot "dummy signs" from fake security companies, you can be sure that they know the real ones. Activating your alarm every time you leave is the only way to benefit from it.
